A Closeout Products Christmas

When I was in my opthamology residency life was hard. My wife, Genevieve, took care of the two kids every day, and did a great job. She made every penny count, and believe me, those pennies were sparse. So every night when I came home around nine-o'-clock, there was a delicious meal already prepared, and I'd eat it with Jesse and Charlotte crawling in between my legs and over my shoulders.

This was before the recession, when things were good, so that even though we didn't live in a large apartment in a nice part of town, I was still able to save about a hundred dollars a week. Here and there I dipped into the fund, when the kid's or Genevieve's birthday rolled around, or when she and I went away for our annual vacation weekend at Fire Island. The while I worked hard, knowing that within three more years it would all pay off.

The summer of '08 my friend Mikey told me he had a good financial tip. Everyone was getting worried and talking about recession, but he knew of a guy who had his marbles lined up and if I gave him a thousand bucks, it'd double, sure as the sun will rise tomorrow morning. Well Mikey and I had gone to Med school together at Downstate and he knew a thing or two about finance—his old man had been a Wall Street banker for thirty years (and had been upset Mikey didn't follow him in the industry). Anyway, I felt pretty good about the tip, so of course I dipped into my fund and gave him a few months of savings.

By September things had bottomed out. I didn't talk to Mikey for weeks, and part of me thought that he had scammed me on purpose, whether because he was jealous of my wife's good looks or some other crazy reason. The holidays rolled around and Genevieve and I realized we barely had enough money for a Christmas dinner, let alone for toys for the kids. I was all ready to give the kids a few cards and tell them a lie about Santa being sick this winter when Genevieve told me about a closeout online. This site, she said, offers closeout toys galore. So I went online and it was true—the toys were a fraction of the cost they should have been. I wouldn't have been able to make do at a large toy store so I thanked goodness for those closeout items. The kids were happy, we had enough money for a turkey dinner, and now that I'm done with residency those days seem a world away.
