After eight hours of looking at a computer screen your eyes begin to lose focus; crossing them is too easy. Hold your arms over your head and hear the click of your rotator cuffs, feel the stretch in your calves when you stand. Your back has developed a natural slouch which isn't entirely unattractive. But this has to change. It's not just physical lethargy—you need mental stimulation.
Program your Kurt Kinetic Road Machine, unlock your Onguard bicycle lock and get out. Just leave, get away and bike. Try to beat the red lights and pedal so you start to sweat. They say that when you train, or at least when you want to burn fat, you should allow your heart to rest for a minute before exerting yourself ninety percent for a minute. Cycle through this until you are drenched.
Or just bike away. Hopefully you won't have to take out your bike supplies and change a flat or anything like that, but there is always a chance. That's why it's good to be prepared. Your cycling computers can show your heart rate so you don't overdo it. Change position, try biking with no hands. The more positions you shift, the more comfortable you will be.
Bike somewhere you've never been before. Feel the breeze dry your forehead, listen to the sounds of ice cream trucks and children playing. Look at the sunlight fade through tree leaves. Make eye contact with pedestrians and car drivers, to see their souls, and to let them know that you exist, for your own safety.
And ride. Ride until you are exhausted. Until you arrive at water. Or a restaurant that looks appealing. Dismount and sit down. Now you've earned it. Isn't it much better than when you're forced to? People look at you half wary, half impressed. Your hair is wet, glossed to your forehead and your shirt is to your back but you don't care. That's how it goes when you're burning off the work day.
When you lie down on your bed later tonight you sigh and feel the vertebrae in your back crackle. You remember, or envision, yourself cycling along, past cars and people, under trees, and the dappling light, flying like tickertape. You see yourself from other people's perspectives. It was all so rich—there was so much interaction between you and the people and the road, and the nature. It was a world away from the office.
