For the most part what we eat will provide our bodies with the nutrients we need to make it through the day. In terms of overall health though many people are found to have deficiencies in calcium, magnesium, and vitamins A, C, and E. As you age, lacking these proper nutrients can cause more serious conditions. Sure you can offset the consequences if you drink a lot of milk, orange juice, and get your daily doses of veggies and fruit, but sometimes when you lead a busy life it's impossible to get a balanced diet every single day.
That's why multivitamins are a good additive to your mornings. Get yourself a beverage, be it tea, coffee or what have you, take your pill, and eat your breakfast. Your body will take the nutrients supplied in the multivitamin and fill in the gaps throughout the day. The same rule applies to vitamins and minerals, protein supplements, iron supplements, you name it.
These are not an alternative to eating. These supplements are meant to round out your diet. It is commonly mistook that multivitamins and supplements are replacements and that they will help treat conditions. While studies have found connections between daily use and healthier bodies it is not to be taken lightly. Multivitamins and the like provide an added boost where necessary. Everybody's body is slightly different. Some people are more prone to calcium loss, others to iron or blood sugar. That's just how it works. Our bodies synthesize our meals into these needed nutrients but they can only do it to an extent. Multivitamins, iron supplements, and protein supplements are intended to replenish the body but they will only be to your advantage so far as you continue eat and exercise properly.
In other words, if you don't eat the recommended servings of protein (or whatever else) each day you're not going to get seriously ill but it's better if you do; and where you're really lacking the supplement will balance your diet. If you're eating potato chips and corn flakes every day and take the multivitamins, well, let's just say it won't be as effective in increasing your overall daily health. It's all about the moderation.
As they say, "an apple a day..." The rule applies to any supplement plans you're currently on. Keep eating healthy and exercising but take the pill just in case you miss some of the vital nutrients.
