Freight Shippers and Safety

Freight shippers have pretty tough jobs. No matter how freight is traveling, whether by land or sea, there is a lot of work involved when it comes to the process of shipping freight. And there's much freight shippers need to be aware of when it comes to their health and safety.

First for any freight shippers dealing with moving the freight, always be careful when having to lift particularly large objects like furniture or heavy electronics. It's important that you lift from a squatting position and not with your legs locked or else you can severely hurt your back. You may also want to think about a harness to help with lifting heavy weight.

If you are dealing with any machine for lifting large freight, be sure to always abide by all instructions. It may seem obvious, but never, ever use them under the influence of alcohol or drugs ,or even just when you are over tired. That is an accident waiting to happen. You should always have someone else supervising as well, just in case anything does go wrong.

If you ship freight by truck and drive for many hours at a time, you need to worry about drivers fatigue. It can be a lot more serious than some would think. It's your body's response to sleep loss and can affect you both mentally and physically. If you start to feel fatigued, there are a few things you can do to help.

Make sure any naps are 30 minutes or less so you don't go into a deep sleep. It'll be enough to keep you going without making you more lethargic in the long run. Pull over and walk around or stretch . This shifting of positions will help. Drink plenty of water and only use caffeine as a temporary remedy because you don't want to end up crashing from overuse.

When you aren't on duty, try to have the same bedtime routine and if you can, keep the same scheduled days off each week. Always eat well and get exercise and this will help your body have natural energy throughout the day.

When it comes to freight and equipment transport, you are putting in a lot of hard work and many hours. Don't let it affect your health and don't play with safety when it comes to traveling. You want to keep your job and return home every day safely!
