How to Properly Wash and Store Blankets and Throws

We love our beds. We spend a good deal of our lives sleeping, so we want them to be comfortable, stylish and of course, clean. Cleaning your blankets and throws may seem as simple as throwing them into the washing machine, but depending on their material and if you are storing them after, there's ways you can clean them to make them last longer.

The first and easiest things to clean are cotton blankets. Since they are cotton, they'll be just fine in your washer and dryer. Just remember that if they are particularly thin, you may want to set them on a delicate setting as to not wear them out too quickly. To freshen your blankets once in a while, air dry them on a clothesline. To keep your blankets in the best shape, you can vacuum them once in a while to get rid of dust and lint.

Bedspreads are a little trickier, since they are thicker and made of heavier materials. Most are washable, but can be awkward since they are so big and often take up the entire washing machine, which can keep it from getting as clean as it could be. Hopefully your the washer you have is large. You may also want to throw them in the dryer for just a bit, but air dry the rest of it once it's damp. Otherwise you'll be using quite a bit of electricity to try to get the whole bedspread bone dry.

If you have blankets and sheets made of specific, more luxurious materials like silk or satin, you will need to get them dry cleaned. You wont be able to clean them properly at home without ruining them. They are an investment, so always keep that in mind before buying blankets made of these materials.

There is always a lot of debate over how often sheets should be washed, but once a week is a pretty good bet. Even if they don't look stained, you want to get rid of dust mites and other microorganisms that may be on them. If you have a pet that likes to sleep in bed with you, you may want to consider washing even more often to get rid of pet hair and dander.

No matter what blankets you use, care is everything. Be consistent and your sheets will last you much longer which means you won't have to buy a new set any time soon.
