When you think about Botox injections, the first thing that comes to mind is most likely celebrities and wrinkle removal. While one of the main purposes of Botox is for cosmetic reasons, Botox is actually used to treat many other medical conditions. Besides having beautiful skin, you may find yourself needing a Botox injection somewhere else to help with other problems or ailments. Recently Botox was discovered to treat frequent migraines. It was actually realized by accident. A patient had a Botox injection for cosmetic reasons and realized that her migraines stopped shortly after. Since then, many institutions have been conducting studies to figure out how and why this happens. One hypothesis is that the Botox blocks the sensory nerves that send pain messages to the brain. Migraine treatment used to be considered an "off label" treatment method but has since been approved as an effective treatment. It's much easier to get a simple injection than to take daily medication. For those who suffer from profuse sweating, there is no need to resort to excessive usage of clinical strength deodorant. Botox is known to treat hyperhidrosis, excessive sweating. Botox injections can stop the secretion of sweat glands to stop sweating of the armpits, hands, feet, and face. This is a much easier procedure than surgery which poses more risks, complications, high cost, and longer recovery period. Botox is a good treatment method for those with bladder disorders and cervical dystonia. Bladder spam is a frequent problem for women and the use of Botox can provide temporary relief of symptoms. If you have an overactive bladder, Botox injections can reduce the problem but you may need repeated injections. Cervical dystonia is a condition that causes uncontrollable twitching movements in the neck due to involuntary muscle contractions. Botox is an approved treatment that can relax muscles and stop the twitching movements. Similarly to the dystonia, the muscle relaxation effect of Botox can be used for those with cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy also has symptoms of spastic movements but of the arms and legs. There is also sudden muscle stiffness that occurs as well. The Botox interrupts the communication between nerves, hence stopping the movements. Botox may not be a "miracle treatment" but it is very incredible because it can help many people with certain illnesses and conditions. If you're suffering from any of these problems, speak with your doctor to see if Botox could be a useful treatment for you.
