Chances are if you're staying in a New York hostel you want more than just the experience of Times Square and Central Park. Not to diminish those attractions in any way, but they are only the tip of the iceberg. New York is definitely a city you could spend two weeks in, and only then would you begin to understand how varied and diverse it is. This article should give you a good idea of what to see and do in order to have the best New York trip possible.

Obviously, you want to see the sights in Manhattan, so wake up early and head uptown to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It gets crowded, especially on the weekends, so after two or three early morning hours spent inside, you will have seen a good amount of art and you will have worked up an appetite. Grab some lunch nearby on Madison Ave., and head into Central Park. Walk around and get a feeling for what the layout. Then walk south to Times Square from Columbus Circle. It's less than a mile, so you could hop the subway, especially if you have a week pass. Ogle at the lights and head downtown, back to your New York hostel.

Check out the rapidly rising Freedom Tower, the new World Trade Center and then head east, to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. You may have to wait in line, but Grimaldi's pizza is worth it - it's some of the city's best. After that, walk around the new Brooklyn Bridge Park and head back to your hostel; you'll probably be pooped.

The Bronx Zoo is a journey for another day, and with hundreds of rare species, is definitely worth it, especially if you're an animal person. To make it an all-day adventure, walk to nearby Arthur Avenue, about fifteen minutes away, and eat at one of the restaurants in the "New Little Italy." Finish it off with a pastry and a cappuccino a third of the price of a Manhattan patisserie's.

If you want to see Brooklyn and are traveling in the summer, head to Coney Island. Nathan's Famous Hot Dogs are a delicious lunch, and a thrilling ride in the recently reopened Luna Park is definitely worth the wait. Hit the boardwalk and take a dip. Then walk along Surf Avenue into Brighton Beach for an authentic Russian dinner.

These three days will be jam-packed so don't feel bad about spreading it out over more than three days. You will surely run into other adventures along the way. Take what comes and enjoy it, and bring your camera from your hostel NY to document it all!
