I may be getting older but I certainly do not want to spend the rest of my life like a pimple on a log, sitting around doing nothing. Especially not as the weather gets warmer when activities get really fun. Instead I will strap on some compression socks or in chillier times compression hose to maintain leg health and I will just get on with living life. There is so much to stand up for all summer long. There is the annual air show me and my husband like to attend each year. I enjoy standing at that event because you can feel the ground rumble beneath your feet for much of the spectacle. Recent years have seen me attending more and more free concerts in the park. Sometimes it is beautifully pleasant classical music and sometimes it is hyper rock or rap music. I like them all, even at my age. Still my commitment to standing up does not help my legs at all. I try and keep my feet elevated at home and around the office. I monitor my leg pain closely and make note of any varicose veins that seem to be rearing their head. I do not want to surrender to leg pain, allowing it to destroy the freedom and fun that makes my life worth living, but I will wear varicose vein stockings or support hose to help me maintain my current level of activity for as long as possible. As a person not particularly invested in vanity I tend to not worry about the appearance of varicose veins but the level of discomfort that comes along with them was not something I had prepared for. That pain could really get in the way of my abundant fun and frolic over the coming years and so I am attempting to get ahead of it. Compression socks, compression pantyhose and jobst socks are one way but also keeping my legs elevated and attempting to use my time standing and walking more wisely. So this summer when I go to the free rock concerts, or the air show, or for July 4th fireworks I know that those things are worth a little time on my feet with or without support stockings. When it comes to standing in long lines at shopping centers or standing at the barbecue for dinner I may just reconsider and stick my legs up. No matter how it goes down I will definitely be wearing compression socks and I will never give up on fun.
