Every child enjoys creating artwork, especially when their treasured work is displayed in picture frames throughout the home. One problem can be this passion for art could be a bit costly, particularly when it comes to supplying your child with art materials. The good news is that, with hardly any cost, you can make many of these art supplies on your own. Here are some great supplies you can make for your own child, for little or no expense or effort.
Create Your Own Glue
Although glue is not a very expensive art material, sometimes you might just run out. To make homemade glue, you only need equal amounts of flour and water. Just mix it together inside a bowl, then put it into a jar that has a snug lid. If you want to make the glue a tad bit more fun, add a drop of food coloring to the mix. This glue can be applied with a small brush or perhaps a clean wooden stick.
Homemade Finger Paints
Finger painting can be a favorite craft project for every age of kids, particularly your smaller kids. For an added bonus, almost anything you are able to create with finger paints generally seems to look fantastic when displayed in wood picture frames. The recipe for finger paints is really easy, as all you need to do is place in a saucepan a quarter of a cup of cornstarch and two cups of cold water. Then, heat until it boils and attains the consistency of finger paint. Take it off from the heat and permit it to cool. Divide into several small containers with tight fitting lids. Now have some fun mixing food coloring into each of the jars, and make some different colors.
Fruity Smelling Play Dough
This fun recipe produces a nice sized batch of play dough that has the scent of fruit. Get a package of unsweetened Kool-Aid, a half cup of salt, and two cups of flour, and mix it all together. Next include two tablespoons of vegetable oil. Add two cups of boiling water, blending together well. Take care on this step if your child helps. Mix with a spoon, forming the dough. Make sure you store this play dough inside a container that is air tight. This dough will smell good enough to eat, but you should remind your youngster not to do this. If your child produces a play dough sculpture they are particularly pleased with, take a few photographs of it. Print some off and exhibit in picture frames as lovely wall art. So long as the play dough is kept in an airtight container, it will last long enough to enable them to produce a wide variety of interesting creations.
Easy Handmade Chalk
It is surprisingly easy to create your own colorful chalk. Take a little amount of powdered tempera paint and blend it with a cup of Plaster of Paris. Add to the mix a half of a cup of cold water and stir it up. Pour mixture into popsicle molds, candy molds, a waxed paper lined toilet paper tube, or possibly a small Dixie cup. As soon as the chalk dries you can take it out of the mold. Your child can use this chalk to create paper artwork, which you can then display in picture frames. The chunky pieces are especially fun when used to make pictures on a driveway or sidewalk.
Now that you have some inexpensive and simple ideas for creating your own art supplies, round up your favorite child and go have a good time! You will both be so happy that you did!
